Il est de ces disques dont l'écoute réjouit immédiatement, comme si vous saviez que les participants de l'oeuvre fomentait en toute connaissance de cause une sorte de « complot du bonheur ». C'est le sentiment qui ressort à l'écoute du premier album de Magali Souriau publié chez Fresh Sound. Une oeuvre d'artiste aguerrie et d'interprète libre et enjouée, qui emmène ses deux partenaires sur des sentiers très peu battus, entre la joie de délivrer des compositions originales ( When the Snow , remarquable Petite Promenade dédiée à son fils, Deep Slow) et une poignée de reprises très bien « senties » : le sublime Estate, Reflection ou Ask Me Now (Monk), Speak Low (Weill) ou un medley Ellington, derrière une Gnossienne de Satie Le point commun entre ces oeuvres : une vision désintéressée qui fait place au bonheur de l'improvisation et du contact avec « l'autre ». Rarement on a senti un trio aussi soudé, aussi proche du coeur même de l'oeuvre Après une enfance française tout ce qu'il y a de « classique » (piano à trois ans, Conservatoire) dans le Sud de la France, la pianiste s'envole vers la Berklee School of Music de Boston en 1989 pour parfaire sa pratique du jazz. Elle fonde un big band à New York, avant de se pencher sur la réalisation de cet album, sur l'invitation de Jordi Pujol, boss de Fresh Sound. Une collection de thèmes particulièrement attrayants et marqués par le bonheur. Chaudement recommandé.

Nowadays, jazz artists release records less frequently than they once did, and partly because of this, each new album takes on an air of supposed (and usually record-company suggested) “importance” that often undercuts the music. I’ve mentioned previously my irritation with the proliferation of “theme” records, as if one has to have a special angle to get anyone to listen to new jazz.
Petite Promenade, the new Fresh Sound recording by pianist Magali Souriau, saxophonist Chris Cheek and bassist Matt Pavolka dispenses with any such pretension, harking back to the days when sympathetic musicians could simply get together for a casual session to cut some tunes, without sending out a press release. It succeeds admirably on its own terms and is an utterly enjoyable collection of wistful jazz with a knotty rhythmic undercurrent.
